I know, dear readers, that I could blog more often for your taste. For instance, my recent visit to Plovdiv in Bulgaria is certainly worth mentioning with more than a few bizarre pictures. So, while riding the train back from the Netherlands, I will try to catch up a little. Please forgive the potentially higher then usual number of typos, I write this on a PDA with a nice but far from perfect keyboard.

So, Plovdiv. After having spent some time there last summer when traveling from and to the Rainbow gathering, I always wanted to come back. Now the fortunes of business travel brought me there for a conference. The city is, as mentioned last year, very well suited for summer leisure. Lots of open air bars and restaurants are sprinkled throughout the old city part, ancient roman ruins are dug out all over the place and the young crowd in the streets is positively in party mood. I visited the nice spots I knew from last summer and discovered a few new ones. The feeling for location and street layout quickly kicked in (admittedly after I nearly led a party of fellow conference participants astray on a drinking tour of the old city, but in the end I found the place we were looking for). Nothing beats the feeling of orientation competence in a foreign city…

The overall feeling of the city has not changed much. Shoping is still ridiculously cheap, the people friendly, few speak english, gross income per head is still rather low and the police has a certain knack for arbitrary policing. The food requires carefull choosing, prime example was the stuff they served in the Trimontium Princess Hotel, where the conference took place. The hotel has, despite serious renovation, an subtle stalin-baroque style and the kitchen personal has apparently not been renewed since the early 70s…

The train is currently stuck in Hamm (Westfalen), waiting for a second train part that should be coupled to it. Weather here is grey here deep in the west, I hope this is not as it will be the rest of the summer…

Speaking of summer, end of July the What The Hack hacker-camp will take place, and since my current trip brought me near the location I took the opportunity to visit the grounds. It has so much space that I seriously consider bringing a bicycle, otherwise moving around the campsite can get a bit time-consuming. Other then this, the spot is nearly perfect. Large open lawns, parted by rows of (hopefully) shadow-giving trees. The only other drawback besides the sheer size of the place is, that it also has quite a number of mosquito-breeding shallow drainage flows. So be prepared to deal with insects.

Wie es der Zufall so wollte gab es gestern später am Abend noch Lipstick live in der temporär-Lokation der Automatenbar . Sehr angenehm, leider nicht ganz so voll wie es angemessen gewesen wäre. Hoffe mal es gibt das ganze auch nochmal in länger und vor mehr tanzwilligem Publikum, diesen Sommer…

People who know me a bit better know: I have no discernable music taste. Just a set of certain things I dont like. Currently I listen a lot to Erdgeists Schrummelhüpfkapelle namens Pumpanickle . At the other end of the spectrum I also currently list to a nice re-discovery, Lipstick . Most important thing both have in common: they have a lot of song material in good quality online as mp3. Lipstick even puts the songs under Creative Commons License , unfortunatlly some of the songs are cut short a bit…

I watched StarWars Episode 3 yesterday, and contrary to all people claiming it to be much better then the ones before, I am not convinced. Ok, no mutant longeared donkey aliens, unnerving everyone with their garbled speach, is a big plus. Even more lengthy relationship / love drama simlation scenes, on a acting level that would better fit an icelandic telenovella, are a big minus. Probably not very easy to get real acting done while playing in front of a bluescreen for weeks, as everything else is computer generated….

The story is so predictable that the most fun thing to do becomes to watch for all the little oddities the story needs to take care off, to make the 4th Episode (formerly known as Episode 1) fit. The space battles are missing any sense of strategy, its just a incomprehensible whirling chaos of laserbeams and exploding star destroyers. The special effects (aka. computer imaging) are the one thing that I really enjoyed. Perfectly done most of the times, so it is worth watching in cinema.

As a friend correctly observed: the old episodes are not much better, we just watched them when we were young and more impressible. So the kids will probably like the new one too and have the advantage that they can now watch the whole saga in correct sequence…

Hier das was ich so am Ende des Tages auf meinem Telefon an Bildern fand, gibt vieleicht einen gewissen Eindruck davon wie es ausserhalb der Sehenswürdigkeiten aussieht. Schon sehr seltsam sind so Wegweiser (leider nicht im Bild) die auf die Entfernung nach Basra (Irak) hinweisen. Weniger weit als von Berlin zur Ostsee…

Eine Inmarsat-Erdfunkstelle mit relativ grossen Schüsseln. Die sind wohl aber nicht mehr akut in Betrieb.

Erdölförderung und Verarbeitung ist der wichtigeste Wirtschaftszweig des Landes und bestimmt eigentlich alles andere.

Das ist Wahlwerbung für die in Kürze anstehenden Kommunalwahlen in Kuwait. Kuwait ist wohl sowas ähnliches wie eine Demokratie, d.h. das Parlament hat die Möglichkeit Gesetze die der Herrscher erlässt abzulehnen. Das einzige Mal wo bisher davon Gebrauch gemacht wurde war wohl ein Gesetz mit dem der Herrscher den Frauen das Wahlrecht für das Parlament einräumen wollte. Da hatten die Herren Volksvertreter dann wohl keine Lust zu… (nicht überprüft, wurde mir so von den Locals erzählt).

Angeregt durch eine Meldung über die Forderung des Vereins Deutscher Sprache zum Zwecke der Verteidigung unser schönen Muttersprache, die selbige im Grundgesetz zu verankern, warf ich einen längeren Blick auf den Netzstandort des Vereins. Ein Glanzlicht dieses Netzauftritts stellt ohne Zweifel die Anglizismen-Ersetzungsliste dar.

Da mir schon öfter auf den Heimatseiten kurzhaaring-national gesinnter Zeitgenossen eine ins absurde abgleitende Vermeidung von Anglizismen auffiel, interessierte mich natürlich wie die kleinen Widrigkeiten der Sprachglobalisierung dort gemeistert werden. Wie zu erwarten, nicht besoders gut. Untenstehend einige besonders gelungene Beispiele:

Ich bin sicher der letzte der nicht gelegentlich einen Hinweis auf den übermässigen und partiell sinnlosen Gebrauch von Anglizismen benötigen würde. Aber vieleicht wäre es den Damen und Herren Sprachschützern anzuraten ihre Bemühungen auf die Bereiche der Sprachverhunzung zu konzentrieren in denen es gute und benutzbare deutsche Worte gibt. Zu versuchen jegliche Anglizismen aus der Sprache zu verbanen und dann auch noch offensichtliche Inkompetenz bei den Ersatzempfehlungen an den Tag zu legen ist sicher nicht besonders zielführend.

Zum Schluss aber noch ein echtes Schmuckstückchen das mich fast wieder Versöhnt hat:
